The Basics

What Is Residential Artificial Grass?

Residential artificial grass is a synthetic lawn made from polyethylene fibers stitched into a perforated backing and installed over a compacted rock base in home yards. It stays green all year without mowing, watering, or fertilizer, drains rainfall through the backing, and gives families and pets a durable, low-maintenance surface in place of natural sod.

Home lawns usually use polyethylene blades (soft, realistic fibers) with a face weight near 60 to 90 ounces per square yard and a pile height of about 1.5 to 1.75 inches. Multi-tone green and tan thatch (curled underlayer fibers) mimics real grass. The base is typically 3 to 4 inches of Class II crushed rock (angular road base) or decomposed granite, capped with a weed barrier fabric. Seams join with seaming tape and adhesive, edges anchor with galvanized nails or bender board, and rounded Durafill or Envirofill infill (coated silica sand) is brushed in to hold blades upright. Good, mid, and premium grades are all options.

Our Process

How We Build Residential Artificial Grass in San Diego

1

Site clearing and excavation

We strip the old sod, soil, and roots to a depth of 3 to 4 inches so the finished lawn sits flush with patios, walkways, and doorways.

2

Grading to drainage

The subgrade is shaped with a 1 to 2 percent fall away from the house so winter rain runs off instead of pooling against the foundation.

3

Base rock and compaction

Class II crushed rock or decomposed granite is spread, moistened, and compacted with a plate compactor into a firm, level pad.

4

Weed barrier and edging

A geotextile weed fabric is laid and bender board or steel edging is set to lock the perimeter and stop lateral spread.

5

Turf layout and seaming

Rolls are set with every blade facing one direction, trimmed to fit, and joined with seaming tape and adhesive for near-invisible seams.

6

Fastening and infill

Galvanized nails secure the edges, then silica infill is spread across the surface to weight the turf and support the blades.

7

Power broom finish

A power broom lifts the fibers upright and settles the infill evenly for a full, natural looking lawn.

Cost

How Much Does Residential Artificial Grass Cost in San Diego?

In San Diego, installed residential artificial grass generally runs about $12 to $20 per square foot, with most family lawns landing near $15 depending on turf grade, base depth, and site access. A typical 1,000 square foot yard falls in the $12,000 to $20,000 range. The system pays back over time through lower water bills and no mowing or fertilizer. Removing a live lawn may qualify for a local SoCal WaterSmart turf rebate, though many programs exclude synthetic turf, so confirm eligibility with your water agency first. On-site measurement is free.

San Diego Specifics

Built for the San Diego Climate

San Diego sits in USDA zones 10a and 10b, with dry, sunny weather most of the year and ongoing water restrictions that make a living lawn costly to keep. Artificial grass stays green through drought with zero irrigation. UV-stable fibers resist fading under strong coastal and inland sun, and lighter blade tones plus cooling infill help the surface run cooler on hot afternoons. During winter rain, water drains through the perforated backing and permeable rock base, so the lawn does not flood. Inland yards in Escondido or El Cajon see more heat than coastal Point Loma.

How We Install

Proper Base Prep Is Everything

A perfect lawn starts under the turf. Here’s how we build one that lasts 15+ years.

1

Site Prep & Excavation

We remove the old lawn and excavate to the right depth so your new turf sits flush and drains properly.

2

Engineered Base

We install and compact a crushed-rock base, the most important step for a flat, firm, long-lasting lawn that drains.

3

Drainage Built In

Our base and optional drainage layers move water away fast, so there are no puddles, even after heavy rain.

4

Premium Turf & Infill

We roll out premium, UV-stable turf, seam it invisibly, secure the edges, and brush in the right infill for support and cooling.

Frequently Asked

Residential Artificial Grass: FAQs

How much does artificial grass cost in San Diego?

Installed pricing usually runs $12 to $20 per square foot, so a 1,000 square foot yard lands around $12,000 to $20,000. The figure depends on turf face weight, base depth, and site access. Estate areas like La Jolla and Rancho Santa Fe trend higher, while South Bay and inland suburbs such as Chula Vista and Santee sit near the lower end.

How long does artificial grass last?

Quality polyethylene turf installed over a properly compacted Class II base commonly lasts 15 to 20 years or more in San Diego. Lifespan depends on foot traffic, UV exposure, and infill upkeep. Premium lines carry manufacturer warranties in the 8 to 15 year range, and a good drainage base protects the backing from standing water and premature breakdown.

Does artificial grass get too hot to walk on?

Synthetic turf can heat up in direct summer sun, similar to concrete or pavers. Lighter blade colors, cooling infill, and occasional rinsing all lower surface temperature. Shade from a tree, pergola, or the house keeps it comfortable, and coastal zones like Coronado stay cooler than inland heat pockets around El Cajon.

Will pet urine cause odor on artificial grass?

Not with the right setup. A fully permeable backing lets urine drain straight through, and antimicrobial infill such as Envirofill or Zeofill neutralizes ammonia odor. A weekly rinse and an occasional enzyme cleaner keep things fresh. Because there is no soil or dead grass to trap waste, odor control is far easier than on a natural lawn.

Does artificial grass look real?

Modern turf uses multi-tone green blades, a brown thatch layer, and varied blade shapes so it reads as living grass from a step away. Face weights near 80 ounces and a 1.5 inch pile give it density and bounce. Brushing the fibers with a power broom and keeping infill topped up preserves that realistic, upright look for years.

How do you maintain an artificial lawn?

Upkeep is light. Rinse off dust, leaf-blow debris, and brush high-traffic paths every few weeks with a stiff broom or power broom. Rinse pet spots and refresh infill every year or two. There is no mowing, edging, watering, or fertilizing, which is why many San Diego homeowners switch during drought and water-restriction periods.

Is there a rebate for replacing my lawn with turf?

SoCal WaterSmart and the Metropolitan Water District pay roughly $2 to $4 per square foot to remove live grass, and unincorporated San Diego County adds incentives for native plants. Importantly, many turf-replacement rebates require water-wise living landscaping and exclude synthetic turf, so confirm current eligibility with your local water agency before you start.

Artificial grass versus new sod, which is better?

Sod is cheaper upfront but needs weekly mowing, regular irrigation, and fertilizer, and it browns under San Diego water limits. Artificial grass costs more to install yet stays green year round with almost no water. Over a 15 to 20 year life, turf usually wins on total cost and time, while sod suits those who want a living surface and can water it.
